Over the weekend, my fiance and I traveled to Oceanside, CA to watch the start of RAAM (Race Across America). RAAM is a cycling race from Oceanside, CA to Annapolis, MD. Riders compete in a variety of categories, including solo and teams. Greg’s PhD advisor from Illinois, Martin Gruebele, is racing as part of the two-man team Captain and the Honey Badger.

As we watched the teams start one by one, it was difficult for me to imagine what they will put their bodies through over the next week or so…

A week from today, I will be competing in my first Ironman, and I can tell you that I will certainly be thinking about the RAAM riders as a source of inspiration for my own race. An Ironman is like nothing compared to their race!

(You can follow Captain America and the Honey Badger on their blog, and all the RAAM racers here.)
